As some of you may know, I am a huge fan of seafood. My general philosophy is that if it used to live in water, it is delicious. That philosophy, and a general sense of adventure when it comes to food has led me to try pretty much every kind of seafood that I can get my hands on. Lamentably, Malawi is a land-locked country, and though the lake supports many (tasty) fish, often the delivery methods are dubious and suspect. All of this, therefore, means that it is not very often that I get my hands on some fresh, good fish, and other seafood is really out of the question.
Several weeks ago, however, I was able to get my hands on a shipment of fresh(ish) squid and prawns. I was really excited about this opportunity, and jumped in feet first. Two big, frozen boxes arrived at my house and I excitedly opened them up, only to realize that when they said I was getting squid and prawns, they weren’t joking! So the adventure began with me googling what to do with a whole, actual squid in my kitchen, as well as how to properly prepare a prawn. It was a really fun adventure, with pretty tasty results. Needless to say, I now know my way around a squid and can prepare some delightful calamari if you want to stop by for dinner!
